About Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre, London

The Elephant & Castle shopping centre is an iconic building in South London. Opened in 1965, the shopping centre has excellent transport links via London underground (Northern and Bakerloo lines) and the Elephant & Castle overground station.

It was the first covered shopping mall in London, however budget constraints limited the size and quality of the building.

The shopping centre is now in need of significant renovation. Although construction work is not planned until at least the middle of the decade, the shopping centre and other parts of the area have been earmarked for considerable redevelopment expenditure, including extended and improved retailing, leisure facilities, new homes and improved public realm.

Travel and parking

By car: Elephant & Castle shopping centre is located in the London Borough of Southwark, south of the River Thames and the City of London.

The shopping centre can be reached from the south by travelling along the A3, along the A2 (Old Kent Road) from the east. Elephant & Castle is well connected to the west and north of London via a number of routes, cross the Thames at a number of places including Westminster Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge, Southwark Bridge and London Bridge.

Nearest train station: Elephant & Castle mainline and underground station is directly connected to the shopping centre.
